Serving our Listeners: Streamlining Programming to Come Fall 2009

Hey Everyone,

After coming across some old schedules in the 'RSU archives from 10, 20, and even 30 years ago, I realized that this station could use some block programming. In the 80s, WRSU was largely rock during the days, as we almost are now. However, there are some shows that are jammed between other shows during the day that could be better placed. We have a lot of great shows that would be better served if they were placed near other shows of their type. Therefore, over the summer we will be working on permanently implementing a block programming system with free-form rock during the daytime hours Monday-Thursday, and a more loose definition of this during the evenings since we don't always have a lot of each of the other genres of music. This seems to be a great way to serve listeners who could lock us in for long periods of time and know when to listen year-round. Keep checking the Studio Blog for eventual proposals.

WRSU Spring Wrap-Up

Hey Everyone,

It is hard to believe, but the spring has really wrapped up here at WRSU. From our 60th anniversary dinner and broadcast, to live remotes for the Irish Hour and the 34th annual NJ Folk Festival, things have been pretty hectic here. The management and current staff enjoyed the company of about 70 alumni at an emotional 60th banquet, peppered with crazy stories that seem even too racy for us young guns! Rushing everyone back to the station for the broadcast was a blast, including a conference call with Charles Brookwell (the first station manager and my predecessor, 1948) and Larry Berger, the former WPLJ-FM program director who worked here at WRSU-AM in the 60s.

If there is such a thing as the magic of radio, it was definitely threading through the packed shoulders of the alumni in that cramped, stuffy studio. Check for the clip on the site as we kick things down a notch and take care of some old business over the summer.

The folk festival was another successful event, put on by our very own Community Affairs Director and Assistant Music Director of World Music, Geoff Pape. We aired about 10 different mini-shows throughout the day, from almost every genre. I believe Geoff did German pop music to open the program at 12, if I am not mistaken (the theme this year was German). I don't know because I was passed out tired until 11:30 that day (still recovering from the 60th dinner, weeks later).

As things wrap up around here, stay tuned as certain shows go on hiatus for the summer, expand to fill other slots, or do their final goodbyes if their host is going to be graduating and will not be retaining their show as an alumnus at the station.

And as always, thanks for your support of the station, as it really is all about YOU.

Dan Mulcahey
